Lleida, Catalonia, has recorded a new May temperature record, with parts of the Lleida plain reaching 37.3C on Thursday after a hot spell across the region.

The automatic station of the Catalan Meteorological Service, Meteocat, in Seròs registered 37.3C at 14:06. The measurement point in Alcarràs also reached 37.3C at 15:29, and the Arborètum weather station in Lleida city hit 37.3C at 17:50.

According to Meteocat, this is the highest May temperature recorded in 86 years of data collection, beating the previous record set on 22 May 2022 by 0.5C.

Forecasters expect temperatures to rise further on Friday, with 38C to 39C forecast for the Lleida plain and 34C to 35C in the Pyrenees. Minimum temperatures in the plain's counties are expected to stay tropical, with overnight lows above 20C.

On Saturday, the Pyrenees could see afternoon showers and storms, while the rest of the region is expected to stay sunny with some high cloud. Temperatures should ease slightly, but the heat is set to continue, with the Lleida plain still reaching 36C to 37C.
