A court in Lleida has cleared more than €53,000 in debt for a local man under Spain’s Second Chance Law, giving him a fresh financial start after years of strain.

The Commercial Court number 1 in Lleida applied the law after reviewing a case that had built up over 12 years. The man’s difficulties began after a divorce, which brought unexpected costs and several legal disputes, according to the law firm that represented him.

His situation was made worse by a working life marked by temporary contracts in transport, logistics and agri-food, which made it hard to save. He later took on debt linked to his current partner after a claim from the Public Employment Service, which added to his burden.

Bergadà Abogados handled the case and said the applicant was acting in good faith after reviewing his documents. The firm also said the same judge had, weeks earlier, cleared a separate debt of €98,233.91 for the man’s partner.

The man said he had to deal with legal procedures on his own while working. He said loan and credit payments kept arriving and that delays built up as he struggled to keep up. He also said he had worked for more than 30 years and felt relieved when he was told the debt had been discharged.
