Lleida marked Corpus Christi on 8 June 2026 with traditional flower carpets laid out in the city streets. The community-led display formed part of the annual religious and cultural observance in Catalonia.

Residents worked together to create the intricate designs using petals and other natural materials. The carpets included religious motifs, geometric patterns and symbols linked to the Corpus Christi celebration.

Known in Catalan as catifes de Corpus, the tradition has deep roots in Catalonia and other parts of Spain. It involves decorating the route of religious processions with temporary artworks made to honour the Eucharist on the feast day.

The custom has developed over centuries, moving from simple street decoration to more detailed floral arrangements. Materials can include flower petals, sawdust, coffee grounds and other organic elements, arranged to form detailed images.

The event brings together people of different ages and reflects a shared sense of heritage in Lleida. The carpets are usually prepared in the early morning and remain in place until the Corpus Christi procession passes over them.

Lleida is expected to continue taking part in the tradition next year. For more local coverage, see our news page.
