Lleida’s local government has approved a €733,404 project to reduce flood risk in Cappont, with the main work centred on the Grenyana area on the city’s left bank. The works are expected to last seven months.

The project includes adapting the canalisation wall near Camí de Grenyana, adding two new pedestrian crossings and eight speed bumps. The wall at the Seròs canal gates will also be extended, and its closing system replaced. To improve the area’s environmental integration, 260 shrubs will be planted.

Further work will adapt the pedestrian crossing at the Canals irrigation ditch, south of Camí de Grenyana. This will include creating an embankment to stop water entering at that point, and renewing the pavement on the irrigation ditch bridge.

The council says the scheme is part of the first phase of flood reduction works in Lleida. Future actions are planned, including reinforcing areas of the Noguerola and lowering the canalisation park. Once those works are complete, the council says facilities such as the new Cappont institute, the new primary care centre, and the expansion of Camps Elisis will be able to go ahead.

In a separate decision, the local government also approved the tender documents for the concession of the Aula de Teatre. The contract will run for two years, with a maximum budget of €756,750.8, and the theatre school is expected to start operating under the new concession from 1 September.

The council had previously tried to tender the management of the space last summer, but that attempt failed after its former managers and students’ families rejected the terms. The previous contract was then extended until now. For more local updates, see our news coverage.
