In L'Escala, residents and local associations gathered on Sunday at Cala Montgó beach to oppose the planned offshore wind farm in the Gulf of Roses. The protest was organised by members of the NO AL PLEMCAT platform.
The group said it rejects what it sees as the industrialisation of the sea and the Empordà through large-scale wind and photovoltaic projects. Its main objection in this case is the offshore project planned for the Gulf of Roses.
Participants also voiced opposition to PLATER, the Catalan government's territorial plan for the rollout of renewable energy. The plan sets out the framework for new energy infrastructure across Catalonia. For more on local coverage, see our news tag.
The platform has argued that projects of this scale could affect the natural environment and traditional economic activity in the Empordà, including fishing and tourism. It has also raised concerns about visual impact and possible ecological disruption along the coast and in marine areas.
Those taking part said they fear the changes these developments could bring to the coastline and local marine life. The platform says it will continue to press its case as regional planning decisions move forward.
The Catalan government is reviewing public feedback on the PLATER plan, with further discussion expected on the future of renewable energy projects in the region. For official background, see the Catalan government Department of Territory and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
