341 schools to receive solar installations
L'Energètica, the renewable energy company owned by the Generalitat de Catalunya, has launched a campaign of "mass installation" of photovoltaic panels across public education buildings in Catalonia. The firm will carry out 234 new installations on school rooftops over the coming months, building on 107 that have already been completed, bringing the total to 341 centres. This represents more than half of all technically viable school buildings in the region. The goal is for every suitable public building to host solar panels by 2028.
Regional breakdown and energy sharing
The Barcelona metropolitan area will see the highest concentration of installations, with 177 projects. This is followed by Girona’s comarques (52), the Camp de Tarragona (44), Penedès (34), Central Catalonia (21), Ponent in Lleida (6), Terres de l’Ebre (4), and Alt Pirineu i Aran (3). Once the campaign concludes, L'Energètica expects to have a total installed capacity of 56 megawatts. This energy will be available not only for the schools themselves but also for nearby public facilities within a five-kilometre radius.
These can be Mossos d'Esquadra police stations, judicial installations or Primary Care Centres (CAP), which may receive surplus energy generated on school rooftops.
The initiative operates under a 'collective self-consumption' model, allowing multiple public buildings to benefit from the same solar generation site.
Next steps and public impact
Schools and local public services across Catalonia will see reduced electricity costs and lower carbon emissions as installations proceed. Residents near participating schools may notice work starting on rooftops in the coming weeks. Affected communities can find further details about specific locations and timelines via L'Energètica's official website, where updates on the rollout are published.
