Opposition Pushes for Greater Accountability
David Martín, spokesperson for Junts per Palafrugell, has called for increased municipal oversight of the town’s newly implemented waste collection and street cleaning service. He argues that despite a higher contract cost, the current level of monitoring by the town council is insufficient to ensure performance standards are met. Martín stated that while the financial investment in the service has increased, this alone is not enough without effective control mechanisms from the Ajuntament (town council). He emphasized that the contract requires rigorous follow-up to deliver the expected improvements in cleanliness and efficiency.
Problems Identified in Waste and Cleaning Services
Junts has identified several shortcomings during the summer months. Overflowing waste containers, the group says, are not due to overfilling but rather to poor bin design. In addition, street cleaning has not yet reached the expected standard, according to Martín. He also criticised the management of illegal dumping, urging the council to make better use of surveillance cameras to identify individuals responsible for improper waste disposal. However, he noted that the contracting process for these cameras has been delayed.

Concerns Over Municipal Investment Priorities
Martín also questioned the current administration’s spending priorities, arguing that some projects do not address the community’s main concerns. He cited the summer improvements to Avinguda d’Espanya, which he claims failed to improve traffic flow. The Junts spokesperson urged the council to avoid allocating resources to initiatives that, in his view, do not resolve Palafrugell’s most pressing issues.
