Barcelona is now the base for Josep Santacreu’s latest business role, after he was unanimously appointed president of the Spanish Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Santacreu is already president of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

The Barcelona Chamber of Commerce confirmed the appointment in a statement on Tuesday. Santacreu succeeds businessman Sebastián Escarrer, who had held the post since 2018, following former corporate president Miquel Valls.

Santacreu said the ICC is an independent business advocacy organisation that is, in his words, “more necessary than ever in a fragmented and turbulent world”. He also said Spanish companies have been part of the body for more than 100 years and should have “a representative force within the ICC”.

The new role adds to Santacreu’s position in several Catalan and Mediterranean business institutions. He also has responsibilities with the Barcelona Chamber, the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce (ASCAME), and the General Council of Chambers of Catalonia.

The ICC says it represents about 45 million businesses worldwide and works to support economic and commercial growth through rules for trade and investment. The Spanish Committee includes 19 state chambers of commerce, nine of them Catalan, as well as major companies and bodies including CaixaBank, Banco Santander, Banc Sabadell, BBVA and Telefónica.
