Catalonia’s Civil Protection has activated the INUNCAT flood risk plan as intense rain is forecast across much of the region from midday today. The alert covers much of Catalonia, with the heaviest downpours expected between midday and 8pm.

According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, the rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms and localised hail. Rainfall intensity could exceed 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes across large parts of the region, with Alt Empordà and Berguedà among the areas expected to be most affected.

Higher thresholds are forecast in Garrotxa, Lluçanès, Osona and Ripollès, where more than 60 litres per square metre could fall in three hours, mainly during the afternoon. The alert is being monitored across Catalonia as conditions develop.

Civil Protection in Martorell is urging residents to take extra care, follow weather updates and avoid unnecessary risks. People are being told to stay away from rivers, streams and ravines, even if it is not raining in those places, and not to cross watercourses that appear to have little water.

If there is an emergency, residents should call 112. Further advice and municipal recommendations on the INUNCAT plan are available from the Generalitat’s interior department at interior.gencat.cat. For more Catalonia news, see our news coverage.
