Second Edition Seeks Young and Older Voices
The Social Action department of the Ajuntament d'Igualada has launched the second edition of the Social Action Literary Awards, a cultural initiative designed to combat age-based discrimination and encourage intergenerational dialogue through creative writing. Sandra de la Iglesia, councillor for Social Action, explained that while last year's theme centred on ageism against older people, this year's competition focuses on discrimination faced by young people. The two editions together explore age-related prejudice from both ends of the age spectrum.
Two Categories for Different Age Groups
The competition maintains two categories:
- «Grans x Moments»: for young people born between 2008 and 2012
- «Moments x Grans»: for individuals born on or before 31 December 1961
Entries must be original, unpublished works in Catalan, between two and eight pages long. Submissions can be sent digitally to [email protected] or handed in person at the Espai Cívic Centre, Carrer de la Trinitat 12.
Judging and Prizes
A jury chaired by Councillor de la Iglesia and including literary professionals, local booksellers, and social and education sector representatives will assess entries based on creativity, originality, sensitivity, and emotional impact. Six prizes will be awarded, three per category, with cash values of €150, €100, and €50, along with a certificate for all finalists. The youth category prizes will be given as school supplies, while adult winners will receive cheques.
Submission Deadline and Award Ceremony
The deadline for entries is Tuesday 17 November 2026 at 15:00. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 26 November 2026 at 19:00 at the Espai Cívic Centre. Ahead of the ceremony, a cross-generational meeting will be held for participants to share experiences and reflections on age-related issues. Councillor de la Iglesia said the initiative aims to use creativity as a tool for social cohesion, inviting both young people and older adults to challenge age-related stereotypes through personal and literary expression.
With this initiative, the Igualada City Council wants to promote creativity as a tool for social cohesion and transformation, while inviting young people and older adults to express, share and break down stereotypes about age from each generation's personal and literary perspective.
