Girona advances social services with AI project
The Ajuntament de Girona is implementing an artificial intelligence tool called Pigall to enhance the planning and delivery of municipal social services. The project, developed in collaboration with the University of Girona, aims to improve service effectiveness, efficiency, fairness, and inclusion by analysing social data through ethical AI applications. Funded by European Next Generation funds, Pigall will create a technological system to process existing data on municipal social benefits and link it to broader social realities. This will support better decision-making in resource allocation and project development, enabling staff to identify community needs more accurately and respond with targeted interventions.
City council earns recognition for innovative policies
On the same day, the city council was honoured at the 45th anniversary event of the Federation of Municipalities of Catalonia for its inclusion in the Bank of Good Practices. The award recognises four new initiatives: anti-discrimination efforts, playgrounds in nursery schools, innovation in social services, and urban environmental education.
Upcoming cultural and community events
Girona will host the eighth edition of "Concerts a Cegues" this November, featuring 19 performances across 11 unique city venues. Additionally, the sixth edition of Nit Bufona, a charity gala for cystic fibrosis research, will take place on 15 October at the Palau de Fires. During the upcoming Sant Narcís Fairs, the council will deploy 'lila points', feminist activity zones, and a public childcare service to support family participation. A highlight will be "Un somni a Fires", a 300-drone light show set for 23 October at 22:00, celebrating local symbols and traditions.
"This project will allow us to be more efficient and apply a tool that is increasingly present in society to social services," said Councillor for Social Rights Núria Pi.
New funding and infrastructure improvements
The council has also launched Girona Actua 2026, a €250,000 initiative to boost quality employment and self-employment. The scheme includes €100,000 for self-employment projects and €150,000 for job creation, with subsidies now available for applications from 13 to 23 October. Meanwhile, improvements are planned for the Figuerola street, where pavements will be widened between Avinguda de Ramon Folc and Carrer de Bonastruc de Porta to enhance accessibility. The city's participation in COMTIC 2026, a tech conference held in Girona today, included sessions on the National Security Scheme and AI, led by the city’s Information Systems and Technologies Service.
