Igualada, in Central Catalonia, will host the Catalan Commercial Associations Summit this autumn, solidifying its role as a leading commercial centre. This announcement came during a visit by the Minister for Business and Labour, Miquel Sàmper, who was accompanied by Igualada's Mayor, Marc Castells.

The visit coincided with European Proximity Trade Day, highlighting the importance of local commerce. Minister Sàmper praised the sector, stating it “builds cities, creates connections, and generates community”. The delegation toured the Rec district, known as the birthplace of the city's leather industry, during the Rec.0 event. They also visited Made.igd, a space that brings together local traders within this commercial event.

Igualada's Commercial Model Praised

The government selected Igualada to host the summit, which will gather representatives from major commercial entities across Catalonia. The event aims to share knowledge and experiences, and to discuss future challenges facing proximity trade. Minister Sàmper emphasised Igualada's significance as a model for commercial revitalisation.

He noted that Igualada “has been able to generate an entire ecosystem of excellence around its industrial history”, which was a key reason for its selection to host the Commercial Associations Summit. Mayor Marc Castells, joined by representatives from local commercial and socio-economic organisations, expressed gratitude for the choice of Igualada.

Castells described Igualada's model as “an authentic open-air shopping centre that acts as a pole of attraction for the region and the country”. This recognition underscores the city's strategic importance in Catalonia's commercial landscape.

Looking Ahead to the Summit

The upcoming summit will provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration among commercial associations. It is expected to address evolving consumer trends, digital transformation, and strategies to support local businesses. The event aims to strengthen the collective voice of Catalonia's commercial sector, ensuring its continued growth and adaptability.
