Forum to Connect Health, Sport and Technology
Girona will host the first edition of the Health and Cycling Forum on 18 September at the Municipal Pavilion Girona-Fontajau. The event, organised by the city council through Girona Innovació Salut i Ciclisme (GISC), coincides with the Sea Otter Europe festival, which runs from 18 to 20 September. The forum aims to bring together professionals from healthcare, research, technology and the cycling industry. It forms part of the Sea Otter Europe Connect programme and is designed to foster collaboration across sectors.
Focus on Cardiovascular Health and Nutrition
The morning session will focus on cardiovascular health, performance and cycling. Cardiologist Ramon Brugada will open the forum with a talk on arrhythmias in cycling and cardiovascular adaptations linked to exercise. A panel discussion will follow, featuring representatives from Garmin, Dipsalut and Moisès Broggi Hospital Complex, addressing topics from cardiology to public health and technology. The afternoon will shift to nutrition, glucose monitoring and gastrointestinal issues in endurance cycling. Dr Josep Vehí, an expert in artificial intelligence applied to health, will present on data analysis and real-time glucose tracking during physical activity. Dr Xavier Aldeguer, gastroenterologist and Innovation Coordinator at Hospital Trueta and Santa Caterina, will discuss digestive discomfort related to long-distance cycling.
Networking and Innovation
A final roundtable will include Cesc de Bode Oliveras from Finisher, bioinformatician Joel López Bercianos, and cyclist Georgina Agell, founder of the project "Con diabetes también se puede" (With diabetes you can too). The forum begins at 10:30 and ends with a professional networking session to connect specialists in health, research, innovation and cycling.
The GISC project seeks to unite actors in a sector we want to generate high added value for Girona's economy.
Vice-mayor and Economic Promotion Councillor Gemma Geis i Carreras described the GISC initiative as pioneering, aiming to build opportunities and improve quality of life through knowledge-based economic development.
