Project to Enhance Intermodal Connectivity
Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) has awarded the design contract for a new underground car park and bus station in Igualada. The facility will be located adjacent to the future underground FGC station on the Llobregat-Anoia line. The contract was awarded on Monday to Barcelona Engineering Workshop, S.L. for €290,987 before VAT, with a completion timeframe of 52 weeks. The project includes the design of the basic and construction plans for the underground car park, the new bus station, and surrounding urban improvements.
Linked to Urban Integration Works
Works on the car park and bus station will begin once the urban integration works for the Llobregat-Anoia line in Igualada are completed. These broader works, which began in 2026, involve sottering the railway line from the Riera d’Òdena bridge to the station and eliminating the level crossing on Avinguda Montserrat. The urban integration project, which has a total investment of €37 million, is being developed under the supervision of the Catalan government’s Department of Territory. A previous phase, involving civil and architectural design work, was awarded to Ayesa for €438,000 in October 2023 and includes provisions for a multimodal transport hub.
The aim is to create a seamless intermodal space where rail, buses, taxis, bicycles, and other mobility services converge.
The new underground car park will serve both FGC rail users and bus passengers. During construction, the current bus station will operate from a temporary nearby location. The overall project aims to transform the area around Igualada station into a modern transport interchange, improving road safety and urban connectivity. The design study includes capacity for around 325 vehicles, including spaces for people with reduced mobility and electric vehicles.
