The Generalitat has launched a €29 million tender for civil engineering works to bury the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) railway and station in Igualada. The scheme will remove the level crossing on Avinguda de Montserrat, affecting a route used by local residents and road users, and is planned to start in early 2026.

The works cover the section between the existing railway bridge over the Riera d'Òdena and Igualada FGC station. According to the Generalitat's announcement, construction is expected to last 28 months and finish in 2028.

Territory Minister Sílvia Paneque said the project would improve safety, sustainability, urban cohesion and quality of life.

Two contracts make up the €37 million scheme

The civil engineering tender is one of two parts of the planned intervention. The Generalitat is also preparing the architectural project and railway and non-railway installations, estimated at €8 million and due to be completed this year.

The project includes an underground car park, a park and a new promenade connecting towards neighbouring Vilanova del Camí. Paneque said 7,500 square metres of public space currently occupied by railway infrastructure would be recovered.

Plans build on earlier FGC integration project

The Generalitat previously awarded Ayesa a contract worth €438,000 to draft the civil engineering and architectural construction projects, with a maximum drafting period of 11 months. The same plans include extending the pedestrian footbridge towards Vilanova del Camí and recovering the former railway alignment beside Escola Guillem Castellà i Raich.
