Girona City Council has issued a leaflet for visitors setting out rules on waste disposal, cycling and considerate behaviour in the Barri Vell, Girona’s historic quarter. Visitors are being told not to leave rubbish outside the designated collection times or use public litter bins for waste, and cyclists must follow the direction of travel, keep off pavements and dismount where pedestrian traffic is heavy.

The guide also explains Girona’s Low Emission Zone, which the leaflet says has been in force since 15 September 2025, including which vehicles are permitted to enter. The restricted area includes the whole of the Barri Vell, according to the Low Emission Zone regulations approved by Girona’s municipal council in May 2025.

“Making a better city is a shared responsibility between those who live here and those who visit. With this leaflet, we want visitors to understand Girona’s daily life and have all the tools to contribute through civic behaviour, especially on mobility and waste management.”Girona mayor Lluc Salellas i Vilar, quoted by Girona FM

Waste and cycling guidance for the historic centre

Waste in the Barri Vell is collected through temporary collection areas. The leaflet states that rubbish must not be deposited outside the collection timetable or placed in public litter bins.

  • Cycle in the permitted direction of travel.
  • Do not ride on pavements.
  • Dismount in places with large numbers of pedestrians.
  • Visit the Barri Vell in small groups, avoid megaphones or loudspeakers, and respect residents’ rest.

The Low Emission Zone rules require some vehicles without an environmental label, and certain vehicles registered outside Girona, to be entered on the municipal register and hold a valid temporary authorisation. The May 2025 regulations list exemptions including vehicles carrying people with reduced mobility, emergency and essential vehicles, public transport, goods vehicles, eligible low-income drivers and qualifying foreign-registered vehicles.

Leaflet available through the tourist office and hotels

The leaflet is being handed to visitors through Girona Tourist Office and has also been distributed to accommodation businesses and tourism organisations. It is published in Catalan, Spanish, English and French.

Visitors can ask for the guide at Girona Tourist Office before entering the Barri Vell, particularly if they need to check waste-disposal times, cycling restrictions or whether their vehicle can enter the Low Emission Zone.
