Girona was the setting for a large school concert on Saturday, 13 June 2026, when hundreds of pupils from across the region performed traditional havaneres at the Montsalvatge hall of the Girona Auditorium.

The annual Cantadeta d’Havaneres was organised by the Ernest Morató Foundation. This year’s theme focused on the remendadores, the women who repaired fishing nets and whose work was often overlooked.

The project is designed to introduce children to havaneres and the coastal history linked to the genre. By centring the concert on the remendadores, organisers aimed to highlight a part of Catalonia’s fishing heritage that is not always well known.

The Ernest Morató Foundation says it works to preserve and promote havaneres, a musical style with deep roots in Catalonia’s coastal communities. The concert also gave students a way to learn about the daily lives and work of the women behind the nets.

According to organisers, the audience gave the performance a strong reception. The foundation says it plans to continue using the event to bring young people closer to Catalan musical traditions in future editions. For more local coverage, see our news tag.
