Girona province recorded 49 hate crimes in 2025, up 48.5% from 33 the year before, according to the annual report from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior. The province now ranks 16th in Spain for incidence, with 5.89 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, above the Catalan average of 3.82 and the Spanish average of 4.92.

The increase was driven mainly by racism, xenophobia and ideology. Cases linked to racism and xenophobia rose from 8 to 10, while ideology nearly tripled, from 4 to 11. Sexual orientation and gender identity remained the largest category overall, with 12 cases, although that was down from 18 in 2024.

Other recorded motivations in Girona in 2025 included 2 cases of antisemitism, 2 linked to religious beliefs or practices, 1 case of aporophobia, and 5 cases of discrimination based on sex or gender. There were no known incidents of anti-Gypsyism, generational discrimination, discrimination due to illness, dysphobia or Islamophobia.

The report also shows 50 victimisations in 2025, up from 35 the previous year. Racism and xenophobia accounted for 17 victims, sexual orientation and gender identity for 15, and ideology for 9. In 2024, sexual orientation and gender identity was the main category for victimisations, with 20, while racism and xenophobia had 10.

Case resolution also increased slightly. The report says 28 hate crimes and incidents were clarified in Girona in 2025, five more than in 2024. The main categories for those clarifications were racism and xenophobia, with 9 cases, sexual orientation and gender identity, with 7, and ideology, with 6.

The number of people arrested or investigated remained low, and fell from 5 in 2024 to 4 in 2025. Of those, two were linked to racism or xenophobia, one to sexual orientation and gender identity, and one to administrative infractions or other incidents.
