Girona, Girona FC have been relegated to Spain’s Segunda División after a home defeat to Elx at Montilivi on 23 May 2026. The result ends the Catalan club’s four-season spell in La Liga.
The team had been in a difficult position for weeks and needed a win to stay up. Despite the home support in Girona, they could not get the result required to secure survival.
Elx went ahead in the first half through Álvaro, putting Girona under pressure. Girona then levelled early in the second half when Arnau scored, which briefly raised hopes of a comeback.
Girona pushed for a late winner, but Lemar hit the crossbar with an effort that would have secured their survival. The final whistle confirmed the club’s return to the second tier.
