Girona City Council has started the process of scrapping nine foreign-registered cars that have been left at its municipal depot for months. Six of the vehicles have French number plates.

The cars were impounded for different reasons, including missing documentation or serious traffic offences, according to the council. Once the legal holding period ended, and with the owners either untraceable or unwilling to collect them, the council decided to move ahead with scrapping.

The decision is intended to clear space at the depot and avoid vehicles occupying the site unnecessarily. It also follows the legal process for unclaimed impounded vehicles.

The vehicles will be taken to an authorised End-of-Life Vehicle Treatment Centre, where they will be dismantled and recycled in line with current regulations. For background on local council updates, see News.

Girona regularly deals with abandoned vehicles, but this case highlights the added difficulty of tracing owners across borders. More local coverage from across Catalonia is available on the News tag page.
