Girona City Council has set out a new package of mobility measures, with changes planned for buses, cycling and parking across the city. The aim is to reduce traffic and pollution while improving day-to-day travel for residents in Girona and the wider Catalonia area.

The council says mobility is central to improving quality of life, alongside climate, health services and safety. It has already introduced changes over the past three years, and now wants to build on that work with further steps for public transport, walking and cycling.

Public transport has been a major focus. Bus frequencies have improved on all lines crossing Girona, including routes to Salt and Fornells, and from Pont Major to Sant Gregori. Services to Torre Gironella and Sant Daniel now run on Sundays, and a fast bus lane has improved the link between Girona and Salt, together with upgrades to Plaça Joan Brossa.

Cycling plans also continue to expand. The Girocleta public bike sharing scheme will extend to Salt for the first time, and Girona will increase its public bike stations by 50%. The council also plans more cycle lanes as part of its wider mobility work. For background on local transport coverage, see our news page.

Parking policy is another key part of the plan. Several school zones have already been pedestrianised, work has started on the renovation of Plaça Catalunya, and the council has pushed for remodelling works at Plaça Espanya. A dissuasive car park at Mas Gri is also linked to the Low Emission Zone, with construction expected to start soon.

On Monday, the council will approve a strategic plan for green and blue parking zones for the next decade. It is designed to organise parking with a clear focus on year-round residents, with green zones expected to expand in Eixample and Sant Narcís within the next year. Further operations are planned in Montilivi, Sant Ponç, Barri Vell and Santa Eugènia, while a new dissuasive car park is also planned for Domeny.

The council says the wider supramunicipal mobility plan will be approved in the coming months. It also wants to update the bus fleet and, in the longer term, establish a railway connection with the urban area as part of Girona’s future city project.
