L'Escala is hosting Gino Rubert’s postmodern altarpiece, which is now on public display at the Alfolí de la Sal. The work, commissioned by the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) during the pandemic, was presented last Saturday to a large crowd.
The exhibition is the first time Rubert’s work has been shown in the Empordà region since his 2008 exhibition at the Empordà Museum in Figueres. While his workshop in Sant Martí d’Empúries opens each year for the Les Muses contemporary art exhibition in L'Escala in December, this display brings a major piece back to the area.
The altarpiece is owned by the Suqué Mateu family, known for Peralada Castle, and is not usually shown to the public. Its display at the Alfolí de la Sal gives visitors a chance to see a work that is normally kept out of public view.
The exhibition runs until 23 August. For more local culture coverage, see our news tag.
More information on the museum commission can be found on the MNAC website, and details about the venue are available from L'Escala Town Council.
