Girona, Catalonia, is set to see Girona FC receive revenue from FIFA after Axel Witsel and Azzedine Ounahi were named for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The tournament begins on Thursday evening with Mexico against South Africa.
Witsel will represent Belgium, while Ounahi will play for Morocco. Their call-ups mean Girona players will feature at a World Cup for the first time since 2018, when Cristhian Stuani, Johan Mojica and Yassine Bounou took part in the Russia tournament.
No Girona players were at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The club’s return to the tournament also comes as supporters wait for the announcement of the new coach for next season.
Names linked with the job include Garcia Pimienta, Arrasate, Borja Jiménez, Lisci, Francisco and Quique Álvarez. Sporting director Quique Cárcel has said it will be a long transfer market, a sign that the club expects patience from fans.
Several former Girona players will also be at the World Cup, including Porro and Baena for Spain, Bounou for Morocco and Bárcenas for Panama. For more Girona coverage, see our news page.
