In Reus, the Catalan government has boarded up the former ICASS elderly care home on Passeig Mata to prevent illegal occupation. The move comes as the building is prepared for demolition and later reconstruction.
The public facility has been closed since July 2024 because of structural problems. Officials from the Department of Social Rights said the boarding-up was carried out to avoid squatters, which could delay the demolition process, according to Diari de Tarragona.
The Generalitat had already announced plans to demolish the existing structure and build a new one. That decision followed an agreement signed with the Spanish state and Reus City Council.
The new facility is intended to provide modern care services for older people in the area. Residents in Reus have been waiting for a decision on the site since the closure.
