Figueres City Council in Girona has started a project to turn linden tree flowers collected in the city into zero-kilometre tea bags. The flowers came from several trees, including ones near the Fages de Climent Library.
The harvest was carried out by workers from the SOC de Verd Urbà programme. The Environment and Urban Services departments led the initiative, and the finished tea bags were handed out at the Senior Citizens' Fair last weekend.
This is part of a wider municipal effort to reuse plant material from Figueres. In January, the council carried out a similar project with bitter oranges from trees in the Barri de la Presó neighbourhood, to stop the fruit falling onto public streets.
That orange project involved the Environment and Urban Services departments and students from the Figueres Hospitality School at the Olivar Gran Institute. Together, they made the city’s first bitter orange marmalade, with help from SOC de Verd Urbà workers.
The marmalade was given to the Barri de la Presó Neighbourhood Association, which distributed it to local residents. More local news from across Catalonia is available on our news tag page.
