Free Access to Europe’s Largest Bastion Fortress
Figueres will open the doors of the Castell de Sant Ferran to the public for free on Sunday 11 October 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00, as part of the European Heritage Days (JEP). The event is organised by the Ajuntament de Figueres in collaboration with the Agència Catalana del Patrimoni Cultural, under a Council of Europe and European Commission initiative. The Castell de Sant Ferran, built in the 18th century, is the largest bastioned fortress in Europe, covering 320,000 m² with an exterior perimeter of 3,125 metres. It stands as the largest monument by area in Catalonia and represents a major feat of military engineering, urban planning, and sanitation of its time. Entry during the open day is free and no reservation is required.
Guided Tours at Museu de l’Empordà and Sant Pere Church
On Saturday 10 October, two additional heritage events will take place in Figueres. At 10:30, the Amics de Sant Pere will lead a guided tour of the Església de Sant Pere, including access to the bell tower. Later that day at 12:00, the Museu de l’Empordà will host a guided tour of its new exhibition, D’Empúries a Spiderman, curated by M. Mercè Cuartiella and Joan Manuel Soldevilla. The exhibition traces the evolution of graphic storytelling in the Empordà region from ancient times to modern comics. The exhibition officially opens on Saturday 3 October and will be featured as part of the heritage weekend.
