In Figueres, anti-racist group Afroféminas has accused mayor Jordi Masquef of promoting institutional racism after a social media post in which he celebrated the expulsion of a man and argued that people who, in his view, do not respect minimum coexistence rules should be expelled from the country.

Masquef presented that position as common sense in the post, which drew strong criticism from Afroféminas. The group said his comments contribute to a climate of discrimination.

The dispute centres on the mayor’s online remarks and the language he used to defend expulsions as a response to behaviour he considered unacceptable. Afroféminas said that framing can legitimise discriminatory practices against specific communities in Figueres.

The organisation has called for a re-evaluation of the mayor’s position, warning about the possible impact on social cohesion and the rights of residents. It said public officials should promote inclusion rather than advocate expulsions based on subjective interpretations of behaviour.
