Figueres will increase police surveillance on firework use in sensitive areas during the Sant Joan and Sant Pere festivities, as the town council seeks to reduce disruption for residents, vulnerable people and animals.
The measures include public awareness work, police control and a designated place for fireworks. The Figueres Urban Guard will carry out static night-time patrols in identified problem areas from 9pm until the early morning, with the operation running until 30 June.
The council will again set up Plaça Europa, within the fairground, as a cordoned-off safe area for launching pyrotechnics. The space will be open from 12 to 30 June as a regulated alternative during the festive period.
Alongside this, the council will run an information campaign called In Figueres, we celebrate festivities with civility, using social media, videos and educational material in municipal facilities. The campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the effects of noise and irresponsible firework use on older people, sensitive individuals and animals.
A municipal decree will also remind residents of the current rules. It restricts higher-category pyrotechnics in the urban centre, except in the Plaça Europa area, and the civility ordinance bans launching fireworks at people, animals, street furniture or areas with vegetation. It also limits pyrotechnic use during certain night-time hours, except for authorised activities.
The council says the measures are intended to strengthen community coexistence and reduce incidents linked to firework use during Sant Joan and Sant Pere.
