Figueres awarded the inaugural Joaquim Vallmajó Prize on 23 April 2026, recognising individuals and organisations working for peace and social justice in the Alt Empordà region. The ceremony, held at the Caputxins convent, saw political, social, and cultural representatives from the area attend.

The Figueres City Council established the award to honour Joaquim Vallmajó, a jurist and activist. The council received thirteen candidatures, including both organisations and personal trajectories. The jury, chaired by Figueres Mayor Marta Felip and comprising representatives from various social and cultural entities, praised the quality and diversity of the submissions.

Celebrating Vallmajó's Values

The jury's deliberation focused on the values Vallmajó represented: the defence of human rights, the fight against injustice, and a commitment to peace. They particularly valued the continuity of actions over time, their social impact, and the capacity for mobilisation within the community.

The Joaquim Vallmajó Prize consists of a commemorative sculpture and a diploma, with no monetary award. The City Council aims for this prize to become a benchmark for recognising solidarity and social commitment across the Empordà region.
