Fernando Carrera, currently the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) leader in the Badalona city council, will be the party's candidate for mayor in the 2027 municipal elections. The PSC announced his candidacy on Friday after Carrera successfully gathered the necessary endorsements, while another potential candidate did not meet the threshold. This means Carrera was proclaimed candidate without the need for primary elections, according to Nació Digital.

Carrera will aim to challenge Xavier Garcia Albiol, the current mayor. He previously served as an advisor to Manuel Valls in Barcelona City Council and was third on the PSC's list in the 2023 elections. Following the departure of former mayor Rubén Guijarro, Carrera has led the socialist group in the council and is the first secretary of the Badalona socialist branch.

Key Candidates Emerge for 2027 Elections

Carrera's nomination adds to a growing list of confirmed candidates for the 2027 local elections in Badalona. Xavier Garcia Albiol has been confirmed to represent the Popular Party (PP), and Àlex Montornès will stand for Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC). Aïda Llauradó is also expected to run again for the Comuns.

Uncertainty remains regarding other parties. It is not yet known if Dolors Sabater will repeat her candidacy with Guanyem, or if Junts, Vox, and Aliança Catalana will present candidates for the upcoming polls.
