From Girona, Francesc Mas has completed a seven-day cycling route from Cap de Creus to Guardamar, Alicante, in memory of his son, Pablo. Pablo would have turned 25 on 17 May, and died last October, which Mas described as “a very hard blow”.

Mas is currently on leave from work and has been following his psychologist’s guidance. He first planned a photography exhibition to honour Pablo, who had been a keen amateur photographer about 10 years ago, but he found that path too difficult to continue.

“Emotionally I couldn’t go on, I had to detach myself a bit, let it rest,” he said. He then turned to cycling, a hobby he enjoys, and shaped the tribute around places that mattered to Pablo.

Pablo had a deep affection for Cap de Creus and Cadaqués, where he and his father spent many hours diving, rowing and walking. He also loved Guardamar, Alicante, and the Santa Pola coast, where he spent his childhood summers. Mas said these were “two places he loved madly and where he was happy, where he always laughed”.

The route, called “L’horitzó compartit” (The Shared Horizon), linked the lighthouses of those two points with the sea as a constant backdrop. It brought together the landscapes tied to Pablo’s life, from the Empordà in Catalonia to the Alicante coast.
