A 53-year-old man has died after being fatally stabbed in a fight in Barcelona's Horta-Guinardó district on Saturday night, police sources confirmed. The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the incident, which occurred in the Sant Genís dels Agudells neighbourhood.

The altercation, involving at least three people, took place around 10:30pm near Plaça de Meguidó, in front of the Casa Groga civic centre, according to ElCaso.com. The man was reportedly attacked from behind with a bladed weapon during the street fight.

Emergency medical services (Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques, SEM) transported the victim to hospital in a critical condition. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and died early on Sunday morning, police confirmed.

Police Investigation Underway

The Mossos d'Esquadra's Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) for the Barcelona region has taken charge of the enquiry. Officers were at the scene overnight, collecting evidence and potential clues to identify those responsible. As of now, no arrests have been made, ElCaso.com reported.

Initial information suggests the victim may have intervened in a dispute between other individuals, according to some witnesses. However, police sources emphasised that the investigation is still in its very early stages and aims to reconstruct the precise sequence of events.

Rising Crime Figures in Barcelona

This fatal stabbing marks the third crime recorded in Barcelona this year and the 13th across Catalonia, according to data compiled by ElCaso.com. It is also the second homicide in the Catalan capital involving a bladed weapon in 2026.

Recent homicides in Barcelona include an incident on Easter Sunday in the Bon Pastor neighbourhood, where a man killed a thief. Additionally, earlier this week, an attempted shooting in broad daylight targeted a member of one of Montenegro's Kotor criminal clans, believed to be part of an ongoing gang conflict.

The Mossos d'Esquadra's investigation into the Horta-Guinardó stabbing is ongoing, with detectives working to establish the full facts and apprehend the perpetrators.
