Mayte Castillo, the former director of Rodalies, has joined Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) Operadora as deputy director of mobility services in the territory. Her appointment aims to strengthen the public company's structure as it prepares to launch the new Tarragona tram service.
Castillo brings 38 years of experience from Renfe, where she started in administration before spending a significant part of her career managing maintenance workshops across Catalonia. In 2018, she was appointed director of Rodalies, a demanding role she held for six years. More recently, she served as director of the Vilanova i la Geltrú railway museum, working to attract young talent to the sector through collaborations with training centres and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
Her new role will see her return to railway management, specifically within the division that oversees FGC's Vallès and Llobregat-Anoia lines. This division will now also incorporate the TramCamp service, which is currently under construction to connect Cambrils, Salou, and Vila-seca in its first phase. A second phase, with no set date, plans to extend the service to Reus and Tarragona.
Strengthening FGC's Leadership
Castillo's move marks the first instance of a senior executive transitioning from Renfe to FGC. She will concentrate particularly on the Tarragona project, which involves managing a more urban operational model, distinct from FGC's existing metropolitan lines. Her recruitment continues FGC's efforts to reinforce its leadership team under the new presidency of Carles Ruiz, which has also seen Alicia Valle join as the company's general director.
FGC has also brought in other experienced profiles. Agustí del Castillo, who was the operational director for Trambaix and Trambesòs for 15 years, became manager of FGC Mobilitat in 2023. This division is responsible for the future R-Aeroport line. Ramon Vall, another former director from the Barcelona tram, joined in 2024 to lead FGC Rail, a new division that will manage the Rodalies de Lleida service.
Both the R-Aeroport and Rodalies de Lleida projects were expected to start this year but are experiencing delays in their service launch, due to issues with either infrastructure or new trains.
