Barcelona is among the main places preparing for Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Catalonia next week, with Endesa saying it has activated a special plan to keep the electricity supply stable.
The company said the plan was announced in a statement on Friday and was developed with the Catalonia Operational Coordination Centre, Cecat. It focuses on prevention, service redundancy and technical teams on the ground to reduce the risk of disruption during the visit.
Endesa said the measures cover all key locations on the Pope’s schedule. In Barcelona, these include the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Cathedral, the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium and the church of Sant Agustí. Outside the city, the plan also covers the Monasterio de Montserrat and the Brians 1 penitentiary centre.
Preparation work included technical inspections of medium and low voltage installations. Endesa said it used thermographic cameras to detect possible anomalies and checked remote control systems so any issue could be identified before it affected supply.
Separately, the Endesa Foundation has enabled the artistic illumination of the cross atop the Sagrada Familia’s Jesus Christ tower. The project uses phosphorescent laser technology, crystal and ceramic materials to project the cross’s symbolism continuously, 24 hours a day.
