In Catalonia, VAT on electricity and gas has returned to the general rate of 21% from 1 June. The change follows a temporary cut to 10% under government anti-crisis measures, according to EFE.
The package was approved on 20 March and was due to run until 30 June, but it allowed some measures to end earlier if supply prices stabilised in April. That condition was met for electricity and gas.
As a result, VAT on natural gas, briquettes, pellets and firewood also goes back to 21%. The special tax on electricity, which had been reduced to 0.5%, has returned to its usual 5% rate.
Fuel subsidies remain in place. These include a reduced VAT rate of 10% and lower hydrocarbon tax rates, because fuel inflation in April stayed above the government's 15% threshold for deactivation.
Other parts of the anti-crisis package will continue until 30 June, including the suspension of the tax on the value of electrical energy, aid for farmers and transporters, and extra discounts for the social electricity bonus.
The government has also started talks with social agents to assess the impact of the current measures and decide what support may be needed after 30 June. For more Catalonia policy updates, see news.
