easyJet launches new Girona routes for summer 2027

British airline easyJet will launch seasonal flights connecting Girona-Costa Brava Airport with London Gatwick and Liverpool John Lennon Airport starting in 2027. The new routes mark the arrival of a second major carrier at the airport, reducing reliance on Ryanair. The Liverpool route will operate twice weekly from March to October 2027, while the London Gatwick service will run twice weekly from June through October, increasing to three flights per week during July and August. These additions will bring around 17,000 more seats to the airport’s summer schedule.

Javier Gándara, easyJet’s general manager for southern Europe, said the airline is focusing initially on the summer market, which he described as a "safe bet" for British travellers, but did not rule out extending services into winter if demand justifies it. Boost for Girona’s airport and tourism

Miquel Noguer, president of Girona Provincial Council, welcomed the announcement, stressing the importance of attracting new airlines rather than depending on a single operator. "What we’ve been seeking for some time is new companies that will back Girona," he said, referring to Ryanair’s dominant presence. Noguer highlighted that discussions with easyJet had been ongoing for a long time and expressed hope the new routes would follow the success seen at Reus Airport, where easyJet began with one route and now operates seven. He and Gándara both emphasized the goal of "de-seasonalising" the airport’s traffic to support year-round operations. Enric Dotras, director of the Lloret de Mar Hospitality Association, called the agreement "historic," saying it improves economic access and strengthens Girona’s international reach, while also boosting tourism.

Call for infrastructure investment

Manel Nadal, Secretary General of Transport, acknowledged that easyJet’s entry was long awaited and pointed to challenges such as rising fuel costs and airport fees. He urged AENA, Spain’s airport authority, to reduce charges and invest in a corporate terminal at Girona-Costa Brava Airport. The Generalitat supports these calls, stressing the need for improved rail connections and facilities to attract private flights. Current investment plans for the airport are expected to exceed €100 million.
