The Catalan government will invest €3.6 million to renew around 50 bus shelters across the Girona region, aiming to create more accessible, secure and sustainable public transport infrastructure.
The works form part of a broader initiative by the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition to modernise bus stops throughout Catalonia. The tender for the Girona phase will be launched in the coming weeks, according to Sílvia Paneque, Minister for Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, who announced the plan at an event in Girona.
New shelters will include accessible pathways for people with reduced mobility, adapted seating and braille information panels. They will also be constructed using recyclable materials and fitted with photovoltaic panels to support energy efficiency.
Paneque described the shelters as modular, designed to blend with their surroundings. The full renovation programme across Catalonia is scheduled to be completed within two years. Improvements will also include better passenger information on bus timetables.
Focus on Regional Infrastructure and Sustainability
The announcement was made during a speech at Girona’s Palau de Congressos, where Paneque highlighted other regional infrastructure projects. These include the long-delayed Preses and Olot bypass roads, for which the final construction project was approved in March 2026.
She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the future health campus in Girona, including the new Trueta hospital, calling it an "extraordinarily significant" project expected to boost medical innovation and reduce patient travel to other centres.
On environmental policy, Paneque outlined a structural plan to reduce Catalonia’s reliance on rainfall by increasing non-conventional water resources to 70% in the coming years. This includes desalination plants at Tordera, Cunit-Foix and La Muga, as well as upgrades to water treatment facilities.

Paneque said, referring to her call for a new financing model for Catalonia, which she estimates could bring in over €4.7 billion annually. She stressed the need for dialogue and social cohesion, warning against divisive rhetoric from right-wing and far-right parties.
