Vinebre, in Catalonia’s Ribera d’Ebre, recorded 39.5C on Friday, 29 May 2026, setting a new absolute temperature record for May in the region, according to the Catalan Meteorological Service, Meteocat.
The reading came as an intense heatwave affected much of Europe. Temperatures began to ease in some parts of Catalonia on Friday after Thursday’s peak, but many municipalities in the Ponent area still saw temperatures well above 35C.
Vinebre also recorded maximum temperatures close to 40C for two consecutive days, underlining the strength of the weather episode. Meteocat said the previous May record was surpassed significantly.
The service continues to monitor conditions as Catalonia moves out of the extreme heat spell. For more local coverage, see our news page.
