In Catalonia, the government has set aside €31 million for the PLEMCAT programme in the Gulf of Roses, as part of its new budget. The funding is intended to support renewable energy work and nature protection.
The allocation comes after environmental groups criticised a reported 48% cut in natural environment and protected areas policies compared with the 2023 budget. During the presentation of the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition's budget, Sílvia Paneque said the issue would be resolved.
PLEMCAT focuses on marine spatial planning and forms part of the government's wider approach to balancing economic development with ecological protection. The Gulf of Roses is a key area for both renewable energy projects and biodiversity.
Officials said the budget reflects a commitment to tackling climate change and protecting Catalonia's natural heritage. The funds are expected to support projects linked to sustainable energy and conservation of marine ecosystems.
