Catalonia will have 50 dog-friendly beaches this summer, with the biggest local changes in Tarragona and Vila-seca. In Vila-seca, in the Tarragonès region, La Pineda beach will open its first dedicated area for dogs, while Tarragona will have two such zones for the first time.
That keeps the total at a similar level to last year, according to officials. It also means more options for pet owners along the Catalan coast, where access rules vary from one municipality to another.
One change goes the other way. Cubelles, in the Garraf region, will not have a dog-friendly beach this year because construction work is still under way in the area that was previously designated.
Across Catalonia, more than 60% of the roughly 70 coastal municipalities now allow dogs on the beach in some form, either with time limits or without them. The figures point to a patchwork of local rules rather than a single coast-wide standard.
The Selva region remains the only Catalan comarca where dogs are not allowed on beaches during the summer months. By contrast, Maresme has the most dog-friendly options, with 13 designated beaches across 80% of its coastal municipalities.
