In Catalonia, more residents are choosing tap water instead of bottled water, according to Aqualia’s latest Sustainable Behaviour Barometer. The company says 67% of people now prefer tap water, a shift it links to growing environmental awareness across the region.

The survey also suggests the habit is spreading beyond the home. Aqualia says 69% of respondents now ask for tap water when dining in restaurants, up from 54.5% in the previous survey.

The report, the ninth edition of the barometer, was carried out between December 2025 and May 2026. Aqualia says the change matters because tap water avoids the production and disposal of single-use bottles, and reduces emissions linked to transport and storage.

The survey also points to other routine habits that respondents say they have adopted. All respondents said they check home taps for leaks and use water responsibly when staying in hotels. Aqualia says 93% avoid flushing wet wipes down the toilet, while 92% only run dishwashers when full. All respondents also said they air-dry clothes instead of using a tumble dryer.

Other reported habits include car-sharing for commuting, which three out of four respondents said they do, and replacing halogen bulbs with LED or low-energy lighting, which 72% said they have done. The survey also found that only half of those questioned ask for digital invoices instead of paper, while 37% collect cold shower water for reuse and 31% rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

Aqualia says its Sosteniblòmetre tool lets people test their routines through a short five-question online check and receive practical advice on water, energy and waste. Since its launch in 2022, nearly 16,000 people have taken part. For more local coverage, see our news page.

The company says the findings come at a time of climate pressure, drought and tighter pressure on natural resources. Aqualia also says it is the first company in its sector certified by AENOR for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, and that its work supports the 2030 Agenda.
