Teachers across Catalonia have rejected a preliminary agreement on pay and working conditions, leaving the regional education debate in a new phase. The Education Ministry says it will still go ahead with the pact, despite the vote.
Education Minister Esther Niubó said the ministry intends to maintain the agreement reached with the unions and called for collective reflection. The result adds pressure on USTEC, the majority union, which had led protests and later backed the pre-agreement.
The deal included a pay rise of €600 gross per month over four years, 6,400 new posts in the system over the same period, and 5,000 secondary school chair positions between 2027 and 2028. The ministry says those improvements are guaranteed and will move forward.
The vote has also left the teachers' protest movement without a clear direction. Members of Professors de Secundària voted in favour of the deal, while CGT remained opposed. The split has raised questions about how the unions will respond next.
