Catalan Interior Minister Núria Parlon announced that the appropriateness and proportionality of the Mossos d'Esquadra's actions last week, when two officers infiltrated a teachers' assembly, will be assessed in the coming hours. The meeting was held to prepare actions for various strikes called to start from Tuesday.
"We must assess the appropriateness of this measure, the proportionality of these measures, and from there we will make the decisions that are appropriate, always from an operational point of view, which is where this decision was made," Parlon said.
Legality of Police Infiltration
Josep M. Vilajosana has written an article questioning why police infiltration in trade union assemblies is illegal. The minister did not directly address this point in her statement.
Parlon recalled that both the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and she herself first expressed support for the Mossos d'Esquadra force and the Director General of Police, Josep Lluís Trapero. She emphasised that Trapero, who holds the rank of Major, was not the one who decided on an operational measure of this nature. "Confidence in the Major exists, as we already said, and in the force too," Parlon added.
Moving forward, the assessment will determine if the infiltration was justified. The outcome could influence future operational decisions regarding public assemblies and police conduct.
