The Catalan government has extended the deadline for rent aid applications for individuals aged 36 to 64, allowing submissions until 8 May 2026. This change, published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC), follows an agreement with the Comuns political group.

This extension comes with several key modifications to the aid programme. The income cap for eligibility has increased to four times the Catalan Sufficiency Income Indicator (IRSC), reaching €36,279.32 annually. Additionally, the rent cap has been raised to €1,000 for municipalities in the Barcelona metropolitan area and €750 for other parts of the Barcelona province. Larger families, single-parent families, and those with a recognised disability and favourable mobility assessment also benefit from an increased rent cap.

New Aid Line for Middle-Aged Renters

This specific aid line targets individuals aged 36 to 64, offering up to €2,400 annually. The exact amount adjusts based on the family unit and the rental price. The Generalitat recommends submitting applications online via its housing agency website. However, residents in Olot without internet access or facing difficulties with online processing can submit their applications in person at the Local Housing Office in Olot.

The Local Housing Office in Olot operates from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 972 27 91 28.

Increased Funding and Coverage

The agreement with the Comuns group not only increased the income cap but also boosted the programme's funding by €106 million compared to the previous call. This additional funding is expected to extend coverage to approximately 40,000 new family units, according to government officials.

These rent subsidies are designed for individuals who, while not at immediate risk of exclusion, require financial assistance to remain in their habitual homes. The programme acts as a tool to help maintain housing stability and prevent residential exclusion.

Aid Amount Details

The Generalitat's rent aid amounts are adjusted to reflect each person's rental payment burden relative to their income. The maximum monthly aid is €200, with a minimum of €50 per month this year. This minimum marks an increase from the €20 per month offered in the previous call. The subsidy caps vary by territorial area; in Girona, for example, the cap remains at €750 per home and €400 per room, a figure established in the 2025 call.

Looking ahead, the extended deadline provides more time for eligible individuals to apply, potentially broadening the programme's reach and impact across Catalonia. The increased funding and adjusted caps aim to offer more substantial support to a wider range of middle-aged renters facing housing costs.
