The Catalan government is stepping up its collaboration with local authorities to protect victims of gender violence, according to officials in Sant Fruitós de Bages. The announcement came after Interior Minister Joan Ignasi Elena and Equality and Feminisms Minister Tània Verge visited the town on 24 April 2026 to present a new action plan.
The ministers met at the local council building, where they stated the government's intention to be "prescriptors" of Central Catalonia. This means they aim to "promote and publicise" initiatives and projects happening in the region.
New Action Plan Against Gender Violence
Minister Elena highlighted the importance of collaboration between administrations and social organisations to tackle gender violence. "We cannot allow any woman to be mistreated," he said, explaining that the new action plan "strengthens" existing measures and "incorporates new ones" to ensure "maximum protection" for victims.
Minister Verge stressed the need for "working together" to "eradicate" gender violence. She detailed that the plan includes "preventive actions", "care resources", and "reintegration measures" for women who have experienced this violence.
Both ministers thanked the Sant Fruitós de Bages Council and other councils in Central Catalonia for their "availability" and "commitment" to joining this fight. The visit was part of a series of meetings the government is holding across Catalonia to explain and promote the new action plan against gender violence.
Moving forward, these regional visits are expected to continue, aiming to ensure widespread understanding and implementation of the new measures. The government hopes this direct engagement will help local communities better address and prevent gender violence.
