Catalan firefighters are helping with the response to a wildfire in Arén, in Huesca province, after the blaze started at about 13:30 on Thursday. The operation is being led by INFOAR, Aragón’s forest fire prevention and extinction service.

Officials said the cause of the fire and the total area affected are still unknown. The incident has brought a large multi-agency response as crews work to contain the flames.

INFOAR has deployed three fire engines, five ground brigades, two helicopters with their helitransported brigades, and nine nature protection agents. Alongside the Catalan Generalitat firefighters, two aerial units from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and firefighters from the Provincial Council of Huesca are also taking part.

The response shows the cross-border cooperation that can come into play when wildfires affect border areas between autonomous communities. Teams are focused on stopping the fire from spreading while conditions remain dry in the area.
