Drivers in Catalonia using the new V16 pre-signalling beacon but failing to carry a mandatory puncture repair kit or spare wheel could face a fine of up to €200, the Guardia Civil has warned. Traffic authorities are reminding motorists that an alternative system for repairing a flat tyre is also compulsory.

Suffering a puncture while driving is a common occurrence for many motorists. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) states that the first action should be to correctly signal the vehicle with the V16 beacon, which became mandatory on 1 January and must be carried in all cars.

Pere Navarro, director of Traffic, confirmed that not displaying the V16 pre-signalling beacon can lead to a fine, as it is a safety element required by law.

Mandatory Repair Systems

Beyond the V16 beacon, many drivers overlook another mandatory item: a spare wheel, a 'biscuit' wheel, or a puncture repair kit. The General Traffic Regulations and the Traffic Law stipulate that all vehicles must have one of these systems to avoid becoming immobilised in the event of a puncture.

Annex XII of the Regulations, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), specifies that vehicles must carry:

  • A full spare wheel.
  • A temporary or 'biscuit' wheel.
  • An alternative system, such as a puncture repair kit, that ensures the vehicle's mobility.

Additionally, the necessary tools for changing or repairing the tyre must also be included.

New Vehicles and Repair Kits

Increasingly, new car models are being manufactured without a spare wheel. The main reasons for this trend include reducing vehicle weight to improve efficiency, saving space in the boot, and lowering manufacturing costs. Instead, manufacturers are incorporating puncture repair kits, which typically contain a liquid sealant, tools, and a compressor for temporary repairs.

Not having a spare wheel or an equivalent alternative system can result in a fine of up to €200. Furthermore, in the event of a breakdown, the vehicle could become immobilised, as the absence of these elements poses a risk to road safety.

Drivers should ensure they carry both the V16 beacon and a suitable tyre repair solution to comply with current regulations and avoid penalties.
