Police in Cassà de la Selva, Girona, arrested a 52-year-old man on 10 April after finding a cannabis plantation and 18 unregistered dogs living in poor conditions on his property.

The Mossos d'Esquadra's Regional Environmental Unit (URMA) began an investigation following a complaint about a neglected dog at a property in Cassà. Officers found the property owner, who also lived there, had not registered it as a zoological centre for breeding, nor as a sporting or hunting kennel. They also noted significant maintenance issues, including a lack of hygiene for both the animals and the premises.

Cannabis Farm Discovered

During a later inspection, officers found a trapdoor in the floor of the kennel's shed. This led via metal stairs to two hidden rooms. Suspecting illegal activity, the agents entered the basement. There, they found a cultivation of 176 cannabis plants, each about a metre tall and in an advanced flowering stage.

The Mossos confiscated the plants and the electrical system used for their growth. This included 22 transformers, 22 LED spotlights, four fans, two air conditioning units, and four air filters. Based on these findings, police arrested the property owner, who was also the resident, on suspicion of a public health offence.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The Girona Investigation Unit has taken over the police and judicial processing of the plantation case. The arrested man, who has no prior criminal record, will soon be summoned to appear before the duty court in Girona.
