Cardona, in Bages, was the setting for the International Salt Congress, where experts said Cardona salt is one of Catalonia’s oldest gastronomic designations. The event took place on Thursday and Friday and focused on the product’s historical value and future potential.

Andreu Galera, a medieval history doctor and archivist, gave the opening address. He explained the historical relevance of Cardona salt and its prospects as a gastronomic product.

The congress also underlined the aim of relaunching the salt for modern culinary use. Organisers want to give the product a stronger place in gourmet markets and wider food distribution.

Cardona salt has long been linked with quality and, according to the congress, has even appeared on royal tables. That history is part of the case for giving the product a new commercial life while keeping its cultural value in view.
