Cardona, in central Catalonia, has marked 100 years since potash salt exploitation began in the municipality, a period that shaped the town’s modern history.
Andreu Galera, director of the Cardona Historical Archive, said the start of potash mining “marked the entire 20th century” for Cardona. Mayor Lluïsa Aliste said the centenary will help remember “a date that profoundly determined the history of our municipality.”
The centenary programme began on Friday and will continue until 2032. The events are intended to keep the history of potash mining in public view and to show how it changed the town’s economy, population and infrastructure.
Galera said the industry had a major effect on Cardona’s identity, with much of the town’s modern development linked to that period. The celebrations will also highlight the impact of potash mining on local culture, architecture and community life over several decades.
